Description

This is my entry for :icondisney-club: and is Elizabeth Peter's Crocodile On The Sandbank, the first in a series starring Amelia Peabody Emerson.

Set in the late Victorian period of the 19th century, the independent and extremely opinionated Amelia Peabody decides to tour the world after her father's death. In Rome, she rescues a young girl called Evelyn, a former heiress who has been abandoned by her rascally lover. Taking her on as a companion, they journey to the land of the Pharaohs, where they meet the Emerson brothers, archaeologists excavating the city of crocodiles. While Evelyn is charmed by the quiet but kind younger brother, Amelia finds herself at odds with the loud and rude older Emerson.

However, when they are threatened by what appears to be an reanimated Mummy who seeks to enact Sobek's curse upon those who dare to uncover his buried city, Amelia and Emerson must work together in order to save their loved ones and uncover a dastardly plot.

If anyone has read this book, you'll notice that the above description is not precisely what happens in the book. I've changed it to fit what I imagine a Disney film would do with this. The city of crocodiles was an actual thing in ancient Egypt and Sobek is the crocodile headed god you see in the picture above. The name of the book refers to an ancient Egyptian poem told in the book its self. But I thought that if Disney actually did this story, they'd want to make things a bit more exciting.

Not that the book isn't exciting, I really would recommend it. You learn a bit about ancient Egypt and what life was like in the late 19th century. The characters are very engaging and there are plenty of humorous moments. I actually enjoy listening to this story as an audio, its a good way to enjoy your favourite books, especially when cooking or travelling.

Heh, here's a small list of song titles I think would fit. Just for fun.

Song- I’ve never had a sister before.
Amelia has seven older brothers but they never showed her much attention. Since neither Amelia or Evelyn ever had a sister, they rejoice in finding each other.

Song- Going on an adventure
This is about Amliea and Evelyn exploring Rome and then their journey to Egypt, including all the sights they see like the tombs, the pyramids, ect.

Song- What do I know?
Emerson demands to know what qualifies Amelia to think she can run an excavation, so she details what she knows of ancient Egypt. It's something of a duet as they both give the other information.

I wrote a tiny bit for this song, it's probably not that good but I thought I'd include it.

Amliea-
Now then......there’s Akhenaten....was he a woman in disguise?

Emerson- Poppycock!

Amelia- I know he ruled 18th dynasty Egypt and worshipped the sun god....

Emerson- that’s a departure...

Amelia-But then he died and it was business as usual with the other gods back in power, including Sobek!

Emerson- What about Tutankhamen?

Amelia- Short lived boy king, married his sister I believe?

Emerson- Don’t they all?

Amelia- Compared to the other great kings, he is a very minor one although.............

Together- We still haven’t found his tomb!!!

Emerson- Ramses the 2nd ruled for 66 years, he battled the Hittites

But did I tell you about Pipi the 2nd? He became Pharaoh when he was six and ruled until he was....

Emerson- a 100.

Amelia- That means he ruled for over 90 years!

But there were also female pharaohs. Hatshepsut, CLEOPATRA VII, SOBEKNEFRU, NITOCRIS, MERNEITH and ANKHESENPEPI II.

Emerson- Now that’s a mouthful.

Amelia- Shall I tell you about mummification? First they cut open the body, tore out the organs and then pulled out the brains through the nose.....

Emerson-I think we get it.

Amelia- Well, you did ask.

Emerson- I wish I hadn't.....

Amelia- Perhaps now you'll admit.....

Emerson- I do not believe this....

Amelia- That women....

Emerson- Utter banderdash.....

Amelia-.... are just as good as men!

Emersion-...........

Amelia- But then, what do I know?

(fun fact: Until his tomb was found, the famous boy king was considered an extremely minor and unimportant one since his rule was so short. We know about him because his is one of the only tombs that was never looted.

Song- traditional Egyptian work song.

Brave had a Gaelic song so it isn’t necessary to understand the exact words.

Song- Sobek the crocodile headed god.

The workers now whisper and sing about the mummy and who he is. The sly Mohammad suggests he is surely a high priest to the god Sobek. The describe the legend of the powerful god, how his crocodiles roamed the nile, the sacrifices to keep him sated, his terrible curses.

That's what I've come up with, hope that works. Other books I'd have loved to have done would be Around the World in Eighty Days (Disney's done it) and Redwall (which I see is an entry heh). I'm definitely more of a writer than an artiest but I really wanted to give this competiion a proper go and this is the result. I'm quite proud of it, it doesn't look half bad considering it's very basic with no shading. I look forward to going over the other entries, good luck everyone. :D

Sounds like it could be a neat movie. ^_^ And I like that you thought of how Disney could adapt the book to work on screen.
